Taking Off

This is the first in a long series of stories and suggestions, random thoughts and recommendations from a life spent looking out through an airplane window.

I am a Canadian by birth, have lived in Switzerland for the last three years and have flown more air miles than most people ever will. When I first watched “up in the air” with George Clooney, I laughed when he revealed his number to be ten million. I don’t remember when it happened and if the number was 10 mil, then I would know a couple of guys who should have had airlines named after them, never mind individual craft.

Business travel has afforded me a number of benefits and air miles, hotel points, car upgrades are some of them. I have never had to scam an upgrade or beg for a seat so if you are looking for a way to job the system or want tips on a free upgrade, I am not your guy.

Right now I am in the process of moving from Switzerland back to Montreal.

There is a flight every day from Zurich to Montreal on Swiss. LX86 pulls back from the E terminal every day at 12:55 and gets in at 3:15, non-stop. An easy 8 hours, plus or minus with no hassles.

Those of you who know me, know that is far too simple a trajectory and I don’t do simple, so I will lay it out

Easy:

Zurich to Montreal, 1 flight, 3720 air miles, 8 hours.

And it looks like this:

The Jules Method:

Zurich to Istanbul to Inchon to Sydney to Beijing to Montreal, 5 flights, 23730 airmiles, 7 days.

And it looks like this:

I don’t do easy.

If you join me for this journey, I hope to grant insights to some great destinations, great places to eat and some tips in making your way around.

I hope you enjoy.

My name is Jules and I approved this message.
